In September, Jared and I talked about my favorite otome games, Code: Realize. In order to properly kick off 2018, we decided to talk about the late 2017 anime adaptation of the game. We discuss how they handled condensing the game into a 12-episode anime, whether you’d ever know it was an otome adaptation, what’s missing, and how Lupin is a more useful version of Tuxedo Mask.

This year has overall been a load of hot garbage. The one shining beacon of hope for me so far has been in video gaming. The quality of new games (and remakes!) this year has been extremely high, even if there were a few major disappointments. Most of the games on this list will come as no surprise to people that know me at all. With that said, here is my list of the best games of 2017, and it is very Nintendo-heavy. I’ve again stuck with 7 games. I figured that sometimes tradition can be fun, so this is my very own. We also made a supplemental Seasonal Anime Checkup OVA episode talking about our choices, and you can listen to that here.
Without further ado…AL’s 2017 Games of the Year!
Leave a CommentSince it’s near Christmas, the two of us at SAC OVA decided to celebrate—Sailor Moon Style! Sailor Moon S: The Movie could be seen as a Christmas movie, and to make it even more interesting, we decided to watch the original 90s English dub. We discuss thoughts overall, that dub, and what changed from the localization. Happy holidays, y’all!
Leave a CommentAfter putting in a combined over 200 hours into the game (albeit skewed a bit toward one side whoops), Jared and I decided to talk about one of the last big releases of 2017–Xenoblade Chronicles 2. I was a huge fan of the original, and so I was stoked to see what they did with this one. We talk about characters, story, mechanics, how it compares in places to XC1, and what we liked and didn’t. At 42:30, we give a spoiler warning as we dive into the late game stuff.
Leave a CommentThis week, Jared and I look to the future of video games, anime, and manga. We talk about all the things we are excited about which are tentatively scheduled for release in 2018, as well as thoughts on what comes after 2018 in gaming. Basically, play Radiant Historia, y’all.
NOTE: We recorded this earlier in the week so announcements made on The Game Awards and at PSX are not covered because we were not aware of them at the time of recording.
Leave a CommentToday, we talk about another one of my favorite games–2011’s Catherine, a social/puzzle game made by Atlus. We talk about the off-the-wall story, the adult themes it covers, where we thought the game was wonderful, where we thought the game sucked, how Jared can’t climb blocks, why you shouldn’t wear Fedoras, alcohol facts, and how freaking fantastic Shoji Meguro’s remixed classical music soundtrack truly is.
Leave a CommentIn order to celebrate the HD rerelease of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney on the 3DS this week, Jared and I talked about one of my favorites (if not my favorite) of the series. I do my best to walk you through the notoriously layered cases of the game, and we talk about the new characters, new mechanics, what it did for the series, and our thoughts on Phoenix Wright in this game and beyond. Apollo is the best ace attorney around, and we use this podcast to make our case!
Leave a CommentSometimes on Seasonal Anime Checkup OVA, we just decide to talk about sad stuff. This was one of those weeks. We watched A Silent Voice (Koe no Katachi), and it is both phenomenally beautiful and heart-wrenchingly written. Lots of talk of cry counts, and we give a spoiler warning pretty early on since we talk about the film in depth. Maybe don’t watch it back to back with Your Name.
Leave a CommentHi all! This week, Jared and I decided to talk about the other Nintendo contender for game of the year–Super Mario Odyssey! We talk about nostalgia, mechanics, music (because of course. It’s me!), our favorite things to throw Cappy on, our favorite and least favorite stages, and how it compares to past Mario games. We give a spoiler warning before we get too deep into the story.
Give it a listen!
Leave a CommentAs your resident musou game fangirl, I was stupidly excited to play Fire Emblem Warriors. Jared and I got time to play it, and here we are to talk about what we think. We talk about the story, the mechanics, the characters, and how it compares as a Fire Emblem game AND as a musou.
