Seasonal Anime Checkup OVA–Catherine

Today, we talk about another one of my favorite games–2011’s Catherine, a social/puzzle game made by Atlus. We talk about the off-the-wall story, the adult themes it covers, where we thought the game was wonderful, where we thought the game sucked, how Jared can’t climb blocks, why you shouldn’t wear Fedoras, alcohol facts, and how freaking fantastic Shoji Meguro’s remixed classical music soundtrack truly is.

Seasonal Anime Checkup OVA–Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney

In order to celebrate the HD rerelease of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney on the 3DS this week, Jared and I talked about one of my favorites (if not my favorite) of the series. I do my best to walk you through the notoriously layered cases of the game, and we talk about the new characters, new mechanics, what it did for the series, and our thoughts on Phoenix Wright in this game and beyond. Apollo is the best ace attorney around, and we use this podcast to make our case!

Seasonal Anime Checkup OVA–A Silent Voice

Sometimes on Seasonal Anime Checkup OVA, we just decide to talk about sad stuff. This was one of those weeks. We watched A Silent Voice (Koe no Katachi), and it is both phenomenally beautiful and heart-wrenchingly written. Lots of talk of cry counts, and we give a spoiler warning pretty early on since we talk about the film in depth. Maybe don’t watch it back to back with Your Name.

Seasonal Anime Checkup OVA–Super Mario Odyssey

Hi all! This week, Jared and I decided to talk about the other Nintendo contender for game of the year–Super Mario Odyssey! We talk about nostalgia, mechanics, music (because of course. It’s me!), our favorite things to throw Cappy on, our favorite and least favorite stages, and how it compares to past Mario games. We give a spoiler warning before we get too deep into the story.

Seasonal Anime Checkup OVA Grab Bag: Layton’s Mystery Journey, Blue Reflection, Pyre, and Bad Apple Wars

This week, Jared and I dig into the grab bag to talk about four games. I talk about the newest Layton game, Layton’s Mystery Journey. While I love the series, this game had some serious flaws. I also give initial thoughts on my playthrough of my most recent otome game, Bad Apple Wars. Jared talked about Pyre, a fantasy sports game developed Supergiant. He also discusses a magical girl RPG called Blue Reflection and how the game itself isn’t awesome but it shows what can be done with the genre.

Seasonal Anime Checkup OVA–Hyouka

This week, Jared and I talk about Hyouka, an anime series from 2012 that recently got a North American release/dub. This is a wonderful (and beautiful!) series that focuses on solving mysteries with a group of friends in the Classic Lit Club. We discuss our thoughts on the dub, the story, and we eventually dive into spoilers of the novels that haven’t been adapted yet. Worth mentioning–Hotaro may be one of the most amazing anime characters I’ve ever seen.

Seasonal Anime Checkup OVA–Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony

I’ve already mentioned my thoughts a little bit through my review last week, but this is our podcast about Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony. We give general opinions and thoughts that are spoiler-free to begin with, then at ~32:56, we really dive into the story of the game. This was one of my most highly anticipated games of the year, but I don’t think I’ve ever been this disappointed in a game’s ending in my life. I can’t recommend this game to anybody, and we tell you why.

On a happy note, we’re in year two of the podcast! Yay!

Seasonal Anime Checkup OVA–Final Fantasy IX

Final Fantasy IX rereleased on the PS4 recently, and Jared and I decided to talk about it. Given that it’s my favorite Final Fantasy, I was stoked!! We talk about the story, the music, our favorite moments, the changes for the PS4 edition, and my absolute hatred of frogs. So. Many. Frogs.
